A Victorian Scandal or Two. Dr Alan Beattie [member no.2] looks at the life of Dr James Copland. Born in Orkney but raised in Noss and Bressay during the late 1700’s and early 1800’s. Educated at Bressay, and Lerwick before Edinburgh. The eminent physician has a somewhat colourful life with three wives and half a dozen children born out of wedlock.

Stalking Dead Relatives. Terry McMeekin [member no. 2058] arrived in Lerwick from Australia with a family party consisting of his sister, brother and a cousin. The purpose was to retrace the journey of their grandmother Barbara Jean Dickson, who in 1889, aged just 7, left Shetland with her parents and siblings to make a new life in Victoria, Australia. This fascinating tale recounts early life in Vementry and the surrounding area.

A Shetland Mariner’s Life, Peter Fraser 1849-1891. Written by Neil Fraser [member no. 1058] this engrossing and detailed account of the seafaring life of Peter Fraser, born on Muckle Roe in 1849. A somewhat typical tale of the time and a fascinating story of a Shetland mariner.
