Latest issue of Coontin Kin now available

The Voar issue of the society magazine Coontin Kin is now available and it’s now full colour throughout as we continue to develop and improve the publication. Issue no.110 has a wide range of interesting new material.

Articles in this issue:

David Aitken – Soldier from Shetland. Written by Isobel Chiswell(member 453)it tells the tale of David (Davie) Nicolson, born in Scalloway on 14th June 1887. Davie’s early life is a sad tale of the early death of his mother. The story develops, he jumps ship in Canada then goes on to serve that country in the Great War.

Jottings by a Shetlander (continued). The second part of the Michael Tait’s tale. The Remarkable will of James Inkster by Dr Alan M Beattie (member 2). James Inkster (1739-1816), born in Burra on 20th May 1739 and was residing in Smyrna (now Izmir), Turkey when his last will was penned. It is indeed a remarkably detailed document for a man who’s life took him far from his homeland.

A Voyage Round the Horn by David Clark. Detail of the somewhat lengthy journey the sailing ship Blackbraes took with the author’s grandfather aboard around Cape Horn in 1899.
